PUERTO JIMENEZ
ABOUT

Puerto Jiménez is the jungle gateway to the Osa Peninsula and Gol

The best way to get to Puerto Jimenez is by flying, as driving can take seven hours or more. Puerto Jimenez has a small regional airport for your convenience. The flight takes 35 minutes from San Jose and has impressive views of the coasts, the “whale’s tail” in Uvita, Rio Siempre, and the palm fields. Don’t forget your camera; the journey is just as beautiful as the destination!

If you are staying in Carate, Adventure Air will get you there in a 10-minute flight from Puerto Jimenez to the Carate airstrip; you can avoid a 2-hour drive!

Alternatively, you can book your flight from San Jose to Carate. We can also connect from Puerto Jimenez to many other destinations such as Corcovado National Park (Sirena Station) Drake Bay, Golfito, Manuel Antonio, San Jose, or Arenal, all in less than one hour.

One of two jumping-off points for Corcovado National Park, Puerto Jiménez is as authentically Tico as it gets in Costa Rica. And, that’s despite growing eco-tourism. Located on Golfo Dulce at the Osa Peninsula’s tip, this tiny port town is strictly local at its core.

Expect to see scarlet macaws overhead or humpback whales and dolphins in the bay. With its own airport, Puerto Jiménez is the launch point for adventure travel in Corcovado and Piedras Blancas national parks—one of the world’s few old-growth rainforests.

PLACES TO DRINK & DINE

According to Frommer’s staff, Il Gardino “is the best fine-dining experience available in Puerto Jimenez.” The pasta and ravioli are made from scratch and the seafood—no surprise—is freshly and perfectly prepared. With everything made to order, Il Gardino is slow dining at its best.

Locally known as Carolina’s, this is the place to sample authentic Costa Rican fare.

Juanita’s Mexican Bar And Grille serve up generous portions of Mexican dishes and seafood. Diners can also enjoy their drink specials or a cold beer.

Try the Pizza Loreto at Ristorante Giardiniera, made with an avocado and onion paste instead of tomato sauce.

Beachside, Perla de Osa offers up a mix of Mediterranean, Mexican, and seafood dishes. The cheddar and avocado sandwiches are recommended, as are the Friday-night salsa parties with live music.

THINGS TO DO

There are many hotels in the area whose main focus is Yoga and meditation given that this area enjoys an impressive connection with nature, away from the bustle of the city, technology, and the masses. Blue Osa resort specializes in one-week yoga retreats, for example.

National Geographic calls Corcovado National Park “the most biologically intense place on earth.” Piedras Blancas National Park, adjacent to Corcovado, is a virgin “Jurassic” forest and a critical wildlife corridor.

Corcovado National park is accessible only on foot, by boat, or by plane, it’s a hiker’s paradise for enjoying the denizens of the jungle: red-eyed tree frogs, quetzals, and tapirs, not to mention two of its rarer inhabitants, the harbor squirrel monkey, and the harpy eagle. Multi-Day Hikes can easily be prearranged with a local guide, and the hiking trips go between Corcovado’s different ranger stations: Carate/La Leona to Sirena and back, or Los Patos to Sirena and then on to La Leona/Carate.

Click here to book your tour to Corcovado via a charter flight with adventure air.

Simple accommodation and meals are the staples for these hikes; be sure to book at least a month ahead because access to the park is limited.

Golfo Dulce’s emerald waters are warm and nutrient-rich. Humpbacks calve in the area through October. Olive Ridley and green sea turtles nest on the beaches while leatherbacks and hawksbills appear less frequently.

The Osa Wildlife Sanctuary across the bay is also a very popular tour. All the animals at the sanctuary are being rehabilitated. The tour often includes the mangroves, snorkeling, and dolphin spotting because there’s no other way to get there than by boat. The price of the tour includes the boat ride, saving money on pricier boat transportation.

Eco-resort Crocodile Bay offers offshore and inshore fishing expeditions for every enthusiast, whether for the first time or a seasoned angler. Crocodile Bay also has kayak and shore fishing tours. If you’re after the resort record on yellowfin tuna or roosterfish, come aboard.

We have experts who can help you create incredible adventure packages in this destination, with the best hotels, transfers, tours, and activities, all depending only on the type of vacation you want to have, your budget, and what you want to see and do.
