Is Puerto Jimenez Worth The Visit?

Destination Notes

The best way to get to Puerto Jimenez is by flying, as driving can take seven hours or more. Puerto Jimenez has a small regional airport for your convenience. The flight takes 35 minutes from San Jose and has impressive views of the coasts, the “whale’s tail” in Uvita, Rio Siempre, and the palm fields. Don’t forget your camera; the journey is just as beautiful as the destination!

If you are staying in Carate, Adventure Air will get you there in a 10-minute flight from Puerto Jimenez to the Carate airstrip; you can avoid a two-hour drive!

Alternatively, you can book your flight from San Jose to Carate. We can also connect from Puerto Jimenez to many other destinations such as Corcovado National Park (Sirena Station) Drake Bay, Golfito, Manuel Antonio, San Jose, or Arenal, all in less than one hour.

One of two jumping-off points for Corcovado National Park, Puerto Jiménez is as authentically Tico as it gets in Costa Rica. And, that’s despite growing eco-tourism. Located on Golfo Dulce at the Osa Peninsula’s tip, this tiny port town is strictly local at its core.

Expect to see scarlet macaws overhead or humpback whales and dolphins in the bay. With its own airport, Puerto Jiménez is the launch point for adventure travel in Corcovado and Piedras Blancas national parks—one of the world’s few old-growth rainforests.
